Just a short drive from Locarno or Lugano, Verzasca Valley is one of Switzerland’s most breathtaking natural treasures. The valley is created by the crystal clear Verzasca River, which carves giant smooth rocks before flowing into Lake Maggiore. The valley is a great place to discover charming stone villages, do some light hiking, and even go for a swim. If you’re visiting Verzasca Valley, I have some tips to help you plan.
Must-see places in Verzasca Valley
Lavertezzo
If you look up Verzasca Valley, you’re guaranteed to see the iconic Ponte dei Salti, a double-arched stone bridge located in the small town of Lavertezzo, which is famous for its picturesque stone houses. This is a good spot to use as a guide when you visit Verzasca Valley.
If you only want to stop by for the views, you can go directly to Lavertezzo, which is where you’ll find the arched bridge Ponte dei Salti and see some of the spectacular rock formations that have been carved by the river. To the west of the river, there are some nice hiking trails and to the east, you’ll find the town, where you can stop for lunch or pop into the Santa Maria degli Angeli Church. There’s also a small park along the river where you can get good views of the bridge. If you have the time, I recommend walking down to where the river Riale Carecchio meets the Verzasca River and have lunch at Osteria Vittoria, where you’ll be treated to an amazing view of a small stone bridge that crosses over Riale Carecchio.
The Verzasca Trail
While you can park directly at the Ponte dei Salti and see the highlights, I recommend you enjoy a bit of hiking in the area. The Verzasca Trail is a popular route along the river that is over 25 km long. It starts in Sonogno and ends in Tenero. However, you can take a much shorter version of this trail and still experience some spectacular scenery. If you’re coming from the south, you can start a lovely nature walk at the Walking Bridge (Ponte pedonale), which is just over one kilometer away from the Ponte dei Salti. Though the path is through a wooded area, you can still catch a glimpse of the emerald river flowing around the giant smooth boulders through the trees.
For a longer hike along the river, you can continue past Ponte dei Salti to the scenic waterfall Cascata di Aquino. This powerful cascade flows from towering rock cliffs which are nestled in the forest. The one-way distance from the Ponte pedonale to Cascata di Aquino is around 3 km. As a reward for your long hike, you can take a dip in the Spiaggetta dei Sassi, a small beach on the way back to the Ponte pedonale. Just be sure to stay in designated areas, which are safe from the fast-moving current of the river and remember that the rocks can be very slippery.
You may be tempted to walk one way in the forest and walk the other way back on the street. While the street offers you a view of the river mostly unobstructed by trees, there are no sidewalks and there is a lot of tourist traffic in the area so it’s not the nicest or safest walk. However, as mentioned above, I do recommend you explore the street side at least around the Ponte dei Salti. There’s a short stretch where you can get plenty of good views safely from a small park to the southwest of the bridge.
Verzasca Dam
The Verzasca Dam, which is also known as the Contra Dam, is one of the tallest dams in Europe and is world-famous for appearing in the opening scene of the James Bond movie GoldenEye. The awe-inspiring dam holds back the Verzasca River to create the Lago di Vogorno. This is a good place to stop for the views, or if you’re a bit of a risk taker, for bungee jumping. You can recreate the James Bond scene with a 220 m jump over the rim of the dam.
Just a couple of kilometers away from the dam, you can take a break to enjoy some fantastic homemade specialties in a courtyard shaded by grape vines at Osteria Paradiso. The restaurant is located in a hillside grotto, which is dog-friendly and has a playground for kids. Of course, this is just one of several grotto restaurants in the area, where you’ll find many local specialties, blending Swiss and Italian flavors.
Getting to Verzasca Valley
Verzasca Valley is easily accessible from most towns in Ticino, the Italian-speaking region of Switzerland. It’s just 22 km, or about 30 minutes by car, from Locarno; and about 56 km from Lugano. We visited as a day trip on the way from Liechtenstein to Locarno, a total distance of 185 km. You can even visit from across the border; it takes about two hours by car to get from Milan in Italy to Verzasca Valley.
If you don’t have a car or you don’t want to worry about finding parking in Verzasca Valley, you can also visit by using the PostBus service. You can take a bus or a combination of train and bus, depending on where you’re coming from, and easily visit many different parts of the valley. For instance, line 321 runs the full length of the valley from Locarno. Whether you have a car or not, knowing the public transportation system is especially useful if you plan to do a significant hiking distance on the Verzasca Trail and don’t want to double back.
Other tips for visiting Verzasca Velley
- Though it’s a popular place to swim, the river is cold pretty much all year round. Even in summer, the water temperature rarely goes above 10 degrees Celsius.
- Parking along the river can be tricky during peak summer season, so either go early or use public transportation.
- Visiting Verzasca Valley in the late spring or early autumn is ideal to avoid crowds.
- Though there are parking machines, it’s beneficial to use the EasyPark app to be able to easily extend your parking time from your phone without having to return to the parking machine.
- You should buy bus tickets at stations/machines or online using the SBB mobile app. Availability of tickets on board is limited.
- Leave your flip flops at home! Wear shoes with good grip, especially if you’re planning on walking around on the stones in the river, which can be slippery.
Verzasca Valley turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip in the canton of Ticino and a great reminder that Switzerland isn’t just posh mountain resorts. The centuries old settlements along the river have a unique old world charm that is not to be missed.
